    Term 1

    Invasion!

We have had an exciting and productive start to the year. In African Elephants, we have approached our new topic, ‘Invasion!’, with curiosity and enthusiasm. The children have been uncovering the world of the Anglo-Saxons – exploring who they were, why they came to Britain, and how they established their kingdoms. A particular highlight was learning about the Sutton Hoo burial. The class was fascinated to discover how much a single ship could reveal about life and beliefs more than a thousand years ago.

    English

This term, our English lessons have been filled with heroic tales and dramatic storytelling as we explored Anglo-Saxon poetry. We studied part of the epic story Beowulf, and the children really enjoyed acting out the intense battle between Beowulf and the monster Grendel. Inspired by this, they wrote their own heroic poems using powerful verbs, vivid adjectives, and well-crafted expanded noun phrases.

We have also been working on improving presentation and cursive handwriting, ensuring that the children’s written work reflects the quality of their ideas.

    Maths

In Maths, we have been strengthening our understanding of place value in four-digit numbers. The children have shown great determination in tackling increasingly challenging tasks, including rounding numbers to the nearest thousand, hundred and ten.

Times tables practice has also been a key focus this term. The class has approached our weekly timed multiplication challenges with growing confidence as part of their preparation for the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check.

    Science

In Science, the children have been exploring the fascinating processes inside the human body through our topic on the digestive system. We began by learning about animal classification and creating food chains and food webs to understand how animals obtain energy. We then investigated the human digestive system – from eating and swallowing to how the body absorbs nutrients and removes waste.

    Other News

At school, our PE lessons have centred on tag rugby. The children have demonstrated excellent teamwork and strategic thinking, developing their ability to communicate, find space, and support one another – just like true athletes.

Another very special highlight this term was preparing for and performing our Harvest Assembly for the whole school and our class parents. The children worked incredibly hard during rehearsals, learning their individual words as well as four songs from scratch. Their commitment and perseverance really paid off, and they performed with confidence and enthusiasm on the day. It was wonderful to see them supporting one another and taking such pride in sharing their performance with an audience.

It has been a wonderful first term, full of learning, enjoyment and discovery. The children should be very proud of all they have achieved. We look forward to the adventures that await us next term as we begin our study of the Vikings.
