Pupil Premium Explained

The pupil premium gives schools extra funding to raise the attainment of those pupils who attract the funding from reception to year 11.  From April 2012 pupil premium funding was extended to children eligible for free school meals at any point in the past 6 years.

For the 2025/26 academic year. each school will receive: 

• £1,515 per pupil of primary-school age
• £1,075 per pupil of secondary-school age
• £2,630 per pupil who:  
  • has been looked after for 1 day or more
  • has been adopted from care
  • has left care under a special guardianship order, a residence order or a child arrangements order 

School accountability for the pupil premium:  

The pupil premium is paid to schools as they are best placed to assess what additional provision their pupils need.  Ofsted inspections report on how schools’ use of the funding affects the attainment of their pupils. The DfE hold schools to account through performance tables, which include data on:

• The attainment of the pupils who attract the funding. 
• The progress made by these pupils.  

Categories of eligible pupils:  

The GOV.UK website explains that a child may be eligible if his/her parents are in receipt of any of the following benefits:

• Universal Credit (provided you have an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400, as assessed by earnings from up to three of your most recent assessment periods)
• Income Support
• Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
• Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
• Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
• The guarantee element of Pension Credit
• Child Tax Credit (provided you're not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
• Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for four weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit

Children who get paid these benefits directly, instead of through a parent or guardian, can also get free school meals. Your child might also get free school meals if you get any of these benefits and your child is both: younger than the compulsory age for starting school, in full-time education
