Term 1

Year 6 have been exploring life during World War II through their writing about evacuees at the train station. This learning journey began when Year 6 collectively gathered in the main hall to act out a scene from a train station during WWII. The children have been developing their descriptive writing skills, imagining how young evacuees might have felt as they prepared to leave their families and travel to the countryside. They have used emotive language, descriptive vocabulary and details about the sights, sounds and atmosphere of the busy train station to bring this important moment in history to life. The children have worked hard to create engaging and thoughtful pieces of writing, showing empathy and understanding of the experiences of children during wartime. The children have also been writing diary entries inspired by Goodnight Mister Tom. They have been exploring the character’s feelings and experiences, using descriptive language and writing in the first person to bring their diary entries to life.

Maths

In maths this term, the children have begun using ‘Reflection Books’, which allow them to set targets, take notes on areas for improvement and errors made, and record various methods to support mastery. The children have also been developing their understanding of place value, factors, multiples and prime numbers. In place value, pupils have been learning to read, write, compare and order numbers up to millions. They have explored the value of each digit depending on its position, practised partitioning numbers in different ways and developed their confidence in using their place value knowledge to solve mathematical problems. Pupils have also been learning about factors and multiples. They have identified factor pairs, explored common factors and practised finding multiples of given numbers.

Topic

For our topic this term, Year 6 have been looking at Britain in Conflict throughout history. They have begun by looking at chronology and cause and effect. They have explored the wars and battles that have shaped Britain’s history, including key events such as the First and Second World Wars, and how these conflicts affected people’s lives. They have explored why wars happened, who was involved, how soldiers and civilians were affected, and how Britain changed as a result. The topic helps children understand the causes and consequences of conflict, the importance of peace, and how the past has influenced Britain today.
