Term 1

What a brilliant start to the year Indian Tigers have had! Our class has worked incredibly hard and has much to be proud of for the way they have started Year 5. Our topic of ‘Dynamic Dynasties’ has focused on the civilisations of Ancient China.

English

Despite having started the new school year of 2026–27, Indian Tigers haven’t spent much time in 2026 at all! Our phenomenal time-travel stories have whisked us back through the centuries to the battlefields and healing huts of Ancient China.

The children have been painting with their words to bring a school-trip setting to life, building atmosphere and intrigue before their main character’s curiosity gets the better of them and they touch a mysterious artefact that transports them back to Ancient China!

Throughout their writing, Indian Tigers have been developing their use of expanded noun phrases, modal verbs and punctuated direct speech to bring their adventure to life. These stories truly are a wonderful read!

Maths

Throughout Term One, we have explored place value within 1,000,000, working with 4-, 5- and 6-digit numbers. Building upon our knowledge of place value, Indian Tigers have then applied their skills of addition and subtraction to these numbers, recognising that these are inverse operations, and have tackled challenging sums such as missing-number and multi-step problems.

PSHE

This term, we have explored the qualities of a good friendship and how to navigate friendship issues, including personal boundaries and the bystander effect. We have also explored how our brains respond to big emotions through the concept of “Flipping Your Lid”. Using our fists to model the brain, we learnt about the prefrontal cortex (our thinking brain, responsible for learning, decision-making and regulation), the brain stem (which controls basic functions such as breathing and heartbeat) and the amygdala (which triggers emotional, instinctive responses such as fight, flight or freeze). When we “flip our lid”, our emotional brain takes over, making logical thinking more difficult. Once we calm down, these parts reconnect, allowing us to reflect and make better choices. As Year 5s, we have discussed taking responsibility for our actions and explored calming strategies to use alongside our Zones of Regulation, including scientific techniques that activate the parasympathetic nervous system and use bilateral stimulation to help regulate our bodies. We have really enjoyed using a scientific lens to better understand ourselves and others.

R.E.

This term, we have been exploring the question, “How far would a Sikh go for their religion?” We have learnt about key Sikh beliefs, the importance of the Golden Temple and the Langar, Sikh weddings, and the significance of the Five Ks and what these represent to Sikhs. Through our learning, we have explored the choices, commitments and sacrifices Sikhs may make as part of their faith, considering why these are important to them. We have also reflected on what commitment means to us and how people can show dedication to their beliefs and values.

Science

We have been exploring forces, learning to identify contact and non-contact forces, including gravity, this term. We have investigated the difference between mass and weight and explored how friction affects movement across different surfaces. Through practical investigations, Indian Tigers have been making predictions, taking measurements and using their results to draw conclusions about how forces affect the world around us.
