Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and/or spelling. Some features include difficulties in phonological awareness, verbal memory and verbal processing speed.
Some ways that you can support your child at home:
- Give them extra time to think about what you have said and to respond.
- Use visual prompts and checklists to help them to remember what they need to do and in what order, e.g. getting ready in the morning.
- Chunk homework into shorter bursts rather than one long session.
- Read to them every day as well as hearing them read. Encourage a love for books through visiting the library, listening to audio books etc.
- Encourage independence as much as possible.
- Use drawings, songs, music etc. to help them to remember key facts.
- Not currently formally diagnosed through the NHS in Kent. Can do an in school screener, speak to the SENCo if you have concerns.
