Mental health & wellbeing

There may be times in a child’s life where they struggle with their mental health and wellbeing. This could be triggered by many things such as bereavement, moving house, change in family situation, new siblings, etc.

Some ways that you can support your child at home:

  • Make time and space for them to talk to you. This is usually done best when playing a game or going for a walk, rather than asking them questions directly.
  • Ensure they get enough sleep and maintain a healthy diet.
  • Encourage them to talk about their feelings and model talking about your own. Ask the SENCo for some visuals to support this.
  • Take what they say seriously. Listening to and valuing what they say without judgment.
  • Encourage their interests and a sense of gratitude for what they have.
  • Look at ways of helping others and looking outside of themselves.
  • There are ways that we can support in school and also external professionals we can refer to, so please talk to the SENCo if you have concerns.
  • You can also speak to the GP.
