  • Heroes and Villains - Canadian Bears

    Wed 30 Jan 2019

As part of Heroes and Villains topic, we have been exploring the concept of an ‘unsung hero.’ We invited Mrs Schofield in to talk to us about her job. We often associate jobs such as a firefighter or a police officer as someone that is a hero, but we believe, anyone is a hero in their own right! We all have our own ‘special powers.’ Mrs Schofield is an unsung hero for the amazing work she does with unwell children.

Here are some of our thoughts on other ‘unsung’ heroes:

“My Mum, because she cares for me”

“I think that a vet is important because they help animals and animals are just as important as people!” – Nolly

“A Teacher because they help us grow our brains which means we can get good jobs when we are older” – Mckenzi

“A food shop assistant, because if they didn’t work in the shop to sell us our food we would be hungry” – Ashirya

“A childminder is an unsung hero because they look after you when your Mum or Dad have to go to work” - Scarlett

  • Jubilee University - Italian Ibex

    Fri 18 Jan 2019

Italian Ibex spent Jubilee University Week considering what they would like to be when they grow up. The children showed a great understanding of the steps they need to take to achieve their goals. On Tuesday, we spent the day exploring the concept of ‘Growth Mindset’, and we learned about the struggles some very successful people, such as Albert Einstein, went through before accomplishing their ambitions.

We had great fun when set the task of ‘rescuing’ every member of our team and crossing ‘the river’ (school playground). We could only use a skipping rope and two ‘lily pads’ and only one person at a time could balance on them. This required lots of patience, team-work and lateral thinking!

During the week Italian Ibex were extremely lucky to be visited by local professionals each day. We spoke to policemen and women, a musician, an artist, business people and even two scientists who gave each of us a small piece of strawberry DNA to take home!

The highlight of our week was becoming teachers for the day. Miss Birkby was so proud of Italian Ibex for the consideration and preparation that went into their maths lessons for Spanish Bulls. The children planned and delivered their lessons thoughtfully and were amazing teachers and role models!

Well done Italian Ibex for all your hard work this week. We have really explored the working world. I hope you achieve your dreams.

  • Keeping a Healthy Mind - African Elephants

    Fri 18 Jan 2019

African Elephants celebrated Jubilee University Week by focusing on KEEPING A HEALTHY MIND.
The class welcomed a number of visitors and they explored the different ways to achieve this.
This included a very special visitor called Courtney Tulloch, a British elite international gymnast. Representing England, he is the Commonwealth Games Champion on rings, and a silver medallist on vault.
Pupils were inspired by him and asked some thought provoking questions.
Throughout the week, other specialists were invited in. A guidance counsellor, as well as a Pilates instructor worked with the pupils on different strategies and techniques in keeping the mind healthy.

  • Equipped for Life learning - Jubilee University

    Fri 18 Jan 2019

As part of our Equipped for Life learning, our theme for Jubilee University during Term 3 was ‘Healthy Living.’ Over the course of the week, Canadian Bears took part in many activities, exploring how we can lead a healthy lifestyle. On a daily basis, we challenged ourselves to:

    • Drink 6-8 glasses
    • Eat a healthy breakfast
    • Eat at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables
    • Be active for at least 60 minutes
    • Make one positive change

We kept a record of our achievements and tried to improve or beat our previous days’ results.

We also took part in the 15m Bleep test. Most of us could only reach level 2 or 3 on the first day but by the end of the week we were beating our scores! Maxwell made it to level 9! A very impressive achievement!

We also had Warburton’s in to teach us about food safety and how bread is made. They taught us about Mr and Mrs Warburton and how they created their brand. We got to make yummy sandwiches too!
