Autism
Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) is a neurological condition that affects people’s communication and interaction. They may find it hard to communicate and interact with other people. Find it hard to understand how other people think or feel. May find things like bright lights or loud noises overwhelming, stressful or uncomfortable. May get anxious or upset about unfamiliar situations and social events. May take longer to understand information. May do or think the same things repeatedly.
Some ways that you can support your child at home:
- Let your child know what they are doing that day to help reduce anxiety.
- Allow extra time for your child to understand what you have said.
- Give your child experiences socially in a controlled space. Clubs are a great opportunity for this and many offer specific ones for children with special needs.
- Figure out your child’s sensory sensitivities. This will help you to plan when they may need extra support during the day, for example if you plan to visit a busy place like Tesco then make sure they have time before and after to do something very calming.
- If you are considering a Paediatric referral, speak to the SENCo if you would like to know more about this.
